Summary –
1. Practice
It might sound simple, but practice is really important. Practice talking to people in environments that are more comfortable for you, and then work your way up to the more difficult. Don’t start in loud places with complete strangers, like bars. Go to places you feel more comfortable. Maybe it’s a professional networking event where you know a lot of people, a small social gathering, or striking up a conversation with strangers throughout the day. It could be with the cashier checking out your groceries or a person standing in line next to you. Your social anxiety can be overcome by finding little ways to practice.
2. Prepare
When I first graduated college I had a sales job that required me to go to networking events where I had to drum up business. Before any of these events I would be very nervous. My heart raced, stomach churned, and I worried I would embarrassed myself and the company. I went to my brother and I asked him for advice and he said, “Just prepare a conversation starter. It could be as simple as, ‘So, what brings you here today?‘” This simple question alleviated the extreme anxiety I had at each event. Before I knew it I was talking to ten to fifteen new people every night because I was prepared with a conversation starter. By knowing what to say my social anxiety was eased.
3. Public Speaking
Having spoken to over 200 Universities, I can now say that I have very little anxiety when it comes to public speaking. But it hasn’t always been that way. The only way I got over my fear of public speaking is by doing it A LOT and by building up to it. Quite frankly, the times I bombed were the times I learned the most.
During one speaking gig I was scheduled to speak in the library, during finals, where everyone was studying. They introduced me by saying, “Hey, everybody! Put down your laptops, you’re going to listen to this guy.” So I went on stage, and gave an hour presentation about dating and relationships while everyone tried to continue to study. To say this was a bomb is an understatement. It was the most painful experience of my life. People were yelling at me to shut up, while others went up to the event coordinator and complained. Everyone began to murmur and it was an absolute disaster.
You might think this was a failure, but by experiencing so many varied public speaking situations I’ve gained thick skin. This doesn’t mean you need to go out and speak to thousands of people. Any form of public speaking is a good way to overcome your social anxiety. For example, Toastmasters is a group that practices public speaking on a regular basis. Remember, the better you get at public speaking, the better you’ll get in any social situation.
