You stayed late to close the deal. You led the team through the merger. You built something from nothing.

Then you sit across from a man who seems interested at first, and a few dates later he goes distant. Your friends tell you men are intimidated by you. Even Frank from last Tuesday used that exact word.

So you start to wonder if your resume is the problem.

It’s not.

I’ve coached some of the most accomplished women on the planet: doctors, attorneys, executives and business owners. Here’s what I’ve learned. Successful women turn off men for a reason most people miss. It isn’t the success itself. It’s the qualities that made you successful in the first place.

The good news? Once you see those qualities clearly, you can manage them. And when you do, high-character men will be drawn to you.

Why Successful Women Turn Off Men (It’s Not Your Resume)

Yes, some men are intimidated by your accomplishments. Those are the wrong men.

Most men on your level don’t mind that you run a team or out-earn them. What they care about is whether there’s room for them next to you. Room to lead, to make mistakes and still be chosen.

Here’s the part that might sting. The same drive that earned you the promotion can suffocate a relationship if you don’t learn to dial it down.

And this isn’t only about women. It’s true for successful people in general, men included. I just happen to coach successful single women.

So let’s name the three qualities that push good men away, and how to shift each one without losing yourself.

The 3 Behaviors That Push High-Character Men Away

1. Control

There’s an old saying: lazy people don’t know how to start, and successful people don’t know how to stop.

You make things happen. You’re the doer and the decider. If you run a business, you tell people what to do all day. That’s a big part of why you’re successful.

In dating, that same energy can kill attraction fast.

Many of my clients tell me they want a man who steps up and leads. Be honest with yourself, though. Often what that really means is that you want to lead a man to lead. You still want full control.

Here’s how it plays out. He plans the date and puts in real effort. Then you spend the evening thinking, “This isn’t the restaurant I would have chosen.”

It’s a lot like delegating at work. When someone on your team handles a task, they won’t do it exactly your way. Dating works the same. If you want a man to lead, he will do things differently than you would. The fact that he did it at all is fantastic.

Men lean into their masculine energy when they get to lead. When you try to control what he says, where he goes and how fast the relationship moves, high-character men will pull away. There’s no space left for them to show up.

So release that energy a little. Step back and let him take the lead. You’ll see where he makes mistakes, and that’s okay. Don’t judge him too hard unless it’s a major mistake. If it is, that’s useful information about whether he’s right for you.

And it’s a lot more fun when you’re not directing every scene.

2. Trust

Successful people have a high barrier to trust. I’ve seen it again and again with clients worth hundreds of millions of dollars, with celebrities and with politicians.

If you’ve been in business, you’ve probably been burned. I once had a business partner who was stealing from me. From that day on, my trust barrier went up. As we get older and more successful, trust has to be earned.

Dating can feel the same way. It can seem like everyone around you is a taker, especially once you’ve built real wealth.

But if you walk into a first date at 10% trust, the connection breaks before it starts. If you show up full of skepticism, I promise you he won’t feel connected to you.

That’s why we have one rule at Love Strategies: give every new man 70% trust. Not 100%. Not 10%. Start at 70%, and as he earns more, give more.

Trust is the foundation of every relationship. So if men keep pulling away, ask yourself one question. Are you letting them close enough to prove themselves?

3. Perfectionism

I’m a perfectionist. I admit it.

If you’ve achieved anything big, I’d bet you are too. You’re harder on yourself than on anyone else. You like things done the right way, and you’ve put in long nights building teams, a career or a business.

I built Love Strategies from scratch into a large international organization. It required perfectionism.

Relationships are different. Humans are imperfect by nature. You’re imperfect. I’m imperfect. Relationships are imperfect.

He’s going to miss cues. He won’t understand all of your needs, and he can’t read your mind. He won’t do everything the way you would.

If you hold him to the standard of a product launch, you’ll never feel connected. You’ll only feel let down.

The deepest connections you will ever have are built on the deep imperfections of other people. That’s where real intimacy lives.

You Can Change the Dials

So it’s not your success that turns men off. It’s not your title or your income. It’s the control, the walls and the impossible standard. The best part is that you can change all three without shrinking yourself.

You can release control and still be powerful. You can lower your guard without being naive. You can accept imperfection and still hold high standards for character and commitment.

Once you adjust these dials, you’ll find that high-character men are drawn to your accomplishments. Most successful men want a woman on their level. They want a partner, not a project manager.

So let go of the belief that men don’t want you because of your resume. It isn’t true, and it isn’t helping you. If you want to go deeper, read 5 Ways Successful Women Overlook Good Men next.
